Our Cause

The innovative because of Health and Sustainability Institute is to put the human being at the center of discussion of urbanization impacts on living in cities, health should be considered as a key element for the future and to guarantee the hope of life in a preserved environment healthy.

Brazil is home today more than 80% of its inhabitants in urban areas. “Complex and fragile ecosystems, cities have become the focal point of environmental issues in Brazil,” says Dr. Paul Saldiva. There is, however, one aspect of the relationship between city and half rarely addressed in these discussions environment: a man’s quality of life.

“The human being is the point forgot environmental issue. Environmental agencies are roughly unprepared to deal with health issues. His attention is focused on the ecosystems in remote areas with little activity in the urban environment. On the other hand, the health agencies still do not incorporate organically the environmental issue in the list of its main tasks, “ponders Dr. Paul Saldiva.

Thus, the Institute leads the union of two areas that has been working separately, without considering that one – the environment, impacts dramatically on the other – health, even before human birth.

Through the organization and clear scientific knowledge translation accessible information society; the mobilization of citizens, government and organizations and strengthening their rights in health; and the construction of public policies and support the bills, the Institute promotes the continuous improvement of urban life.

In this regard, we emphasize the importance of information dissemination, sensitization and awareness raising (advocacy) for the theme, the Institute assumes responsibilities for you. A global solution is needed and requires that individuals review their values and prioritize changes in their spending habits, patterns of energy and transport, ie to question your needs. It is necessary to invest in innovation and green solutions are sought, as well as that contabilizem environmental costs along the value chains that meet human needs.

It is necessary also, the inclusion of health in environmental public policy.

By adopting this cause, the Institute – made up of a group of one-third of physicians and two-thirds of many other areas of professionals – it was very well received by other sectors of society, who saw the organization a new agent to seriously promote integration between knowledge and health practice with a view to improving the quality of living in cities.

The Institute becomes thus a pioneer in this matter that so far has been so little explored, and takes this opportunity to walk this new path, proposing innovative way of solutions with the vision to generate transformations in health towards sustainability.
